Larry Evans has passed away due to complications that arose after a gall bladder surgery, according to chessvibes. Larry was a native New Yorker, who played at the Marshall and contended with America’s best for decades. He won numerous tournament victories and championships, including the New York State championship, the U.S. junior championship, as well as the U.S. championship 4 times.
His book, “This Crazy World of Chess” was one of the first pieces of chess journalism I ever read that gave me an appreciation for the genre. It’s full of anecdotes and behind the scene commentary on many top players, though most of all Bobby Fischer, with whom Evans was very close through his formative years as a chess player.
