In Wijk Aan Zee yesterday Anand played a truly beautiful game against Aronian, which Anand himself called one of the best games of his career. The novelty which he uncorked (12…c5!) in the meran semi-slav was the product of his preparation against Gelfand in their WCC match last year, though he never got the chance to use it. In the opening, Black gambits a pawn that gives his pieces a flurry of activity. Anand’s moves over the board were even better than the computer’s lines, as they pushed harder and harder for mate through an impenetrably dark cloud of tactics, while all simplifying lines would leave black with a better ending. Our youtube compatriot Kingscrusher put together an extensive video on the game, while there is also some great analysis on chessvibes.
